Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has said that a number of special initiatives have been planned for athletes at the Maldives Sports Awards, scheduled to take place in February.
The Maldives Sports Awards, set for 15 February, is the largest sporting awards event in the country, recognising the efforts and dedication of athletes who contribute to the development of the sports sector. The awards ceremony was first inaugurated in 2022.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Rafiu said the event will feature a range of activities aimed particularly at athletes and the wider sports community.
“My hope is that the impactful initiatives brought to sports agencies and the entire sports community will be clearly reflected. We are doing many things especially for athletes. Therefore, on this award night, God willing, we will highlight the joy it brings,” he said, adding that the event will fulfil some long-awaited expectations of the sports community.
The minister also noted that this year’s awards ceremony will differ from previous editions. He said certificates will be issued alongside awards, enabling athletes to formally include them in their curricula vitae and providing greater recognition of their achievements.
“Unlike previous years, we have included a certificate to be issued with the award. This will allow athletes to add it to their CVs and ensure the award is more formally recognised,” Minister Rafiu said.
The awards ceremony, which is highly anticipated by Maldivian athletes, will be held at the Social Centre.
