President says energy security vital for development

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that ensuring energy security is essential for the development. The President made the remarks in a message shared on social media to mark the International Day of Clean Energy.

In his message, President Muizzu said energy security is a key pillar of national development, noting that clean energy not only addresses the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation, but also strengthens education, healthcare services and economic opportunities.

He highlighted the importance of environmentally friendly energy at the international level, stating that clean energy plays a vital role in building a healthier and more sustainable planet.

The President said the current administration has taken concrete steps to improve energy efficiency and expand renewable energy capacity in ways suited to the Maldives’ unique environment.

He noted that the government aims to meet 33 percent of the country’s electricity demand through renewable energy sources by the end of 2028.

Concluding his message, President Muizzu called on all to work together to accelerate the transition to clean energy and take bold, decisive action to protect the planet.
