ECM and Police sign agreement to ensure secure local council elections

The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has formalised a partnership with the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to enhance security and coordination for the upcoming local council and Women’s Development Committee elections.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by ECM Chairman Mohamed Zahid and Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, marking a critical step toward ensuring transparent and peaceful electoral processes.

Under the agreement, the police will provide logistical and security support for the local council and WDC elections scheduled for 4 April. The collaboration aims to safeguard polling stations, ballot boxes, election materials, and personnel, mitigating risks of interference or unrest.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Commissioner Naveen emphasised the police force’s commitment to a smooth electoral process.

“We have already begun preparations to ensure a peaceful election. Our priority is the safety of polling stations, ballot papers, and voters,” he stated, adding that security personnel would be deployed nationwide to uphold order.

Meanwhile, ECM Chairman Zahid acknowledged the heightened political tensions typical of election cycles.

“Campaign rivalries often lead to accusations against institutions like ours. But our role is strictly professional—facilitating free and fair elections where voters can participate without fear or influence,” he explained.

A total of 678 councilors—626 for island councils and 52 for city councils—will be elected, alongside an equal number of Women’s Development Committee members. With 294,937 eligible voters (144,527 women and 150,410 men), the ECM has underscored the importance of public trust in the electoral system.
