Record drug seizures under President Muizzu as operations expand

The volume of drugs confiscated over the past two years represents the highest recorded during the first two years of any administration across the past three terms, with drugs worth USD 149 million seized, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.

Delivering the Presidential Address at the first sitting of the first session of the 20th Parliament for the year, the President highlighted efforts undertaken by the government to address the drug issue plaguing the country. He said the government’s focus was on supply reduction and drug rehabilitation.

Sharing statistics, the President said 212 drug operations were conducted in 2025, during which 204 premises were inspected, 271 individuals arrested, 120 cases investigated and 37 people sent for prosecution. He said 712.72 kg of drugs, as well as 7,245 bottles and cans of liquor were seized last year, with their street value exceeding USD 64 million. The President said since he took office on 17 November 2023, 1,366 kg of drugs and 14,825 bottles of liquor were seized, totalling USD 149 million in street value.

The President further said Operation Alimagu, targeting large drug networks, has now been expanded to include cities outside Male’. The operation will be expanded nationwide this year, he revealed.

Speaking on rehabilitation programmes, the President said they focuses on reintegrating users into society, and include religious-based programmes through the Risaalath programme run by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs for juveniles in treatment. He said rehabilitation centres are under construction in three locations, including Kaashidhoo of Kaafu Atoll, Velidhoo of Noonu Atoll and Gan of Laamu Atoll.

The government has amended laws to strengthen measures against drug use and trafficking.
