Seaplane services launched in Thoddoo, fulfilling presidential pledge

The national airline, Maldivian, has officially launched seaplane services to Thoddoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll, fulfilling a presidential pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

A cultural event was held in Thoddoo to mark the occasion, attended by the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim. Maldivian’s operator, Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL)’s Managing Director Ali Saleem, as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and Thoddoo Council members were also in attendance.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Adam Naseer said the service provides new income-generating opportunities for locals. While Thoddoo has long relied on transport, the seaplane service facilitates the export of agricultural products from the island, he said. He further noted that the island’s booming local tourism sector can be further expanded sustainably with the introduction of the service.

The Minister further said the service was included in this year’s Presidential Statement under a policy to improve tourism and transport. While it supports island tourism and economic growth and facilitates income-generation, it also reduces the inconvenience caused by rough seas for residents and tourists, he added.

Addressing the ceremony, Managing Director Saleem said the project was prioritised as it was a presidential pledge. While travel to and from islands with flourishing local tourism via sea is burdensome, the launch of seaplane service in Thoddoo is expected to improve connectivity for residents and tourists and maintain sustainable travel.

The service operates twice a week on Thursdays and Saturdays, additional flights will be added as demand increases. A special fare of USD 52 is available for locals.

Maldivian plans to expand seaplane services to additional resorts by securing additional seaplanes.
