Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Saturday it had begun slapping fines on people caught littering in public areas.
The agency said those littering the streets and other public places in Malé are being issued fines under the “Environmental Protection and Preservation Act” of the Maldives.
The act gives the agency the power to issue fines to those who dump litter anywhere other than in an approved waste disposal site.
EPA said it was also working to implement the law in the atolls.
