The Ministry of Education has signed an agreement with the Maldives National University (MNU) to launch a fully funded diploma-level training programme for teachers specialising in Special Education Needs (SEN).
The agreement was signed by Minister of State for Education Dr Ahmed Mohamed on behalf of the Ministry, and Vice Chancellor Dr Aishath Shehenaz representing MNU.
This collaborative initiative marks a pivotal component of the national teacher training programme, a flagship project under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential promise to transform and strengthen the nation’s education system.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Ministry will cover all course fees for participants and provide a monthly allowance of USD 97.3 to support trainee teachers throughout the duration of the programme.
The diploma course, similar to the one being offered at Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) and Villa College, combines rigorous academic instruction with hands-on practical experience, including classroom teaching, school visits, and specialised workshops designed to equip educators with the skills necessary to support students with diverse learning needs.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to equity in education, President Muizzu has affirmed that SEN teachers will also be eligible for a risk allowance or special incentive as recognition of the unique challenges they face.
This initiative underscores the administration’s broader vision to ensure that no child is left behind, expanding access to quality education and future employment opportunities for children with special needs across the Maldives.
