President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the renovation of two major parks and the Tsunami Monument area in Malé is expected to be completed in time for Eid.
The Government is currently undertaking redevelopment works at Republic Square (Jumhooree Maidhaan), Sultan Park and the Tsunami Monument area.
Highlighting the efforts to restore key public spaces in the capital, the President noted that parks developed during his tenure as Housing Minister and later as Mayor had since fallen into disrepair. He said the Government had initiated redevelopment works to restore these areas, some of which had suffered damage over the past two decades.
According to the President, most of the redevelopment work at Republic Square has been completed, with final works under way to ensure it is fully ready by Eid. The upgrading of Sultan Park, including the addition of modern facilities, is also progressing towards completion within the same timeframe. In addition, the Tsunami Monument area is being redeveloped and is expected to be completed by Eid.
“These are responsibilities that should have been fulfilled by the council. They were not carried out. Sultan Park was in ruins, Republic Square was in ruins, and Rasfannu was in decline. The Tsunami Monument area remains a place of beauty,” President Muizzu said.
Sultan Park and Republic Square were closed for renovation in August last year, when the current works commenced. The project includes refurbishment of the Sultan Park view structure, treehouse, walkways and children’s play areas.
Works at Republic Square are nearing completion, and a section of the area has already been reopened to the public.
Further development at Rasfannu has been entrusted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). MTCC is installing a drainage system and carrying out repairs to the outer canal, while MWSC is renovating the Rasfannu pavilion and constructing public toilet facilities.
The ground floor of the pavilion has been completed and is now in use. Construction of the toilet facilities at Rasfannu is under way, with the overall works expected to conclude by March.
