STELCO takes over essential utilities in Huraa

The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has officially taken over the provision of electricity, water, and sewerage services in Huraa, Kaafu Atoll, marking a significant milestone in the island’s development.

The transition was formalised at a signing ceremony held at STELCO's head office, where a service transfer agreement was signed between STELCO and Fenaka Corporation Limited, which previously managed utilities on the island.

The agreement was signed by Fenaka’s Managing Director, Mohamed Najah, and STELCO’s Deputy Managing Director, Dr Ali Azwar. With this shift, 32 former Fenaka employees who served Huraa’s utility needs have been transferred to STELCO, ensuring continuity and stability in service delivery. This move extends STELCO’s existing network across the Kaafu Atoll, making Huraa the final island in the region to be fully integrated into its utility framework.

Huraa MP, Anara Naeem, hailed the transition as a long-anticipated achievement for the community.

“Today has fulfilled the hope of the people of Huraa for many years,” she said at the ceremony.

“While all other islands in the atoll have long benefited from STELCO’s reliable services, Huraa has now finally joined them. This will make life easier for our people and pave the way for greater progress and development.”

Fenaka MD Najah reflected on the transition with a sense of closure and optimism. “It is the end of our story in K. Huraa, but I hope that another new chapter will begin,” he said, calling the handover the beginning of a new series of chapters for the island.

Dr Azwar affirmed the STELCO’s commitment to maintaining high standards.

“We will continue to provide these services to Huraa at the same level as other islands, and we are already planning further development projects to improve utility infrastructure,” he said.

Currently, STELCO delivers electricity to 36 islands, water to 25, and sewerage services to 24 across the Greater Male region, Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, and Vaavu Atolls.
