MTCC to lead major land and road works in Hoarafushi

The government has commissioned a series of expansive infrastructure agreements with the state-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), authorising a multi-million-dollar programme of land reclamation and coastal fortification on Hoarafushi.

The contracts, which encompass a sophisticated suite of maritime and terrestrial engineering projects, were signed by Mohamed Shamil, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, and Hassan Naufal Nasir, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of the MTCC. The signing, attended by Member of Parliament Ali Moosa, signals a high priority for the Haa Alifu Atoll.

At the core of the works is an initiative to add 25.07 hectares of reclaimed land to the island’s footprint, designed to alleviate long-standing spatial constraints, officials noted. To safeguard this expansion, the agreement stipulates a 580-metre revetment, 270 metres of strategically positioned groynes, and a 1,496-metre bioswale system to regulate drainage. The government has committed USD 12.94 million to this dual reclamation and defence effort, imposing a rigorous 330-day timeline for completion.

In tandem with these maritime efforts, the MTCC has secured a USD 2.86 million mandate for the third phase of Hoarafushi’s road development network. This phase, operating under a 360-day delivery schedule, consolidates the enterprise’s role in the island's urban transformation, as it is already executing the first and second phases of the local road construction.
