Road modernisation project kicks off in Gemanafushi

A major infrastructure upgrade is underway in Gemanafushi as the Road Development Corporation Limited (RDC) officially commenced work on the modernisation of five key roads across the island.

The project, awarded to the RDC in June 2023, commenced active construction on 18 March, marking a significant step toward fulfilling President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to improve connectivity and infrastructure in the island’s administrative and industrial zones.

The comprehensive development initiative includes full paving using zigzag interlocking blocks, installation of street lighting, creation of tree pits, construction of drainage canals, and integration of junctions for future service cable installations.

A key component of the project is the installation of a modern stormwater management system designed to mitigate frequent flooding, a long-standing challenge for the island.

Additional features include the laying of carbstone pathways, placement of road signs, and general paving work to enhance safety and accessibility. With a total investment of USD 4.94 million, this project underscores the government’s broader commitment to equitable development across the country.

As part of a nationwide push, the RDC is spearheading similar road improvement efforts across multiple atolls, prioritising sustainable solutions over traditional tarmacking—focusing instead on resilient designs suited to local conditions, including improved sand roads and enhanced flood resilience, particularly in tourism-reliant islands.
