Gov’t launches special ferry service to boost agricultural trade from Vaikaradhoo

A dedicated ferry service has been launched to transport agricultural produce from Vaikaradhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll to KulhudhuffushiCity, marking a major step forward in supporting local farmers and strengthening the agricultural supply chain.

The initiative fulfills a promise made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Vaikaradhoo, where he pledged immediate solutions to the logistical challenges hindering farmers' access to markets.

Starting 3 April, a designated vessel will operate weekly, facilitating the smooth and efficient movement of fresh produce. The contract for the service has been officially awarded, with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare overseeing all operational arrangements.

This new ferry system is expected to significantly enhance farmers’ livelihoods by reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring timely delivery of goods to urban markets. By connecting Vaikaradhoo directly to Kulhudhuffushi—one of the northern trade hubs—farmers will now enjoy greater profitability and market access.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) meanwhile, has been deploying AgroNat’s specially designed agri-boats, engineered for the unique maritime conditions of the Maldives. Built to withstand rough seas and equipped with easy-docking capabilities, these vessels are tailored for climate resilience and efficiency across the archipelago’s dispersed islands.

The agri-boats feature state-of-the-art facilities, including grain storage compartments, solar-powered cold and dry storage units, and dedicated crew rest areas—making them the most environmentally sustainable option for agricultural transport across the Maldives. With solar-powered refrigeration, the vessels ensure that perishable goods remain fresh during transit, minimising spoilage and maximising value for farmers.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to expanding market-linkage initiatives nationwide, emphasising that reliable, eco-friendly transportation is key to building a self-sufficient agricultural sector.
