The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, has heralded the contribution of Bangladeshi migrant workers as "indispensable" to the nation’s development, pledging his government’s unwavering support for a workforce he described as a primary catalyst for economic growth.
Speaking at a ceremony in the capital to mark the 55th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh, Minister Khaleel framed the presence of these workers as a cornerstone of the Maldives’ modernisation. He linked their efforts directly to the island nation’s domestic stability, asserting that the protection of their rights remains a steadfast priority for the administration.
"The arduous efforts of the Bangladeshi citizens residing in the Maldives play a pivotal role in the development of both our nations, and the Maldivian government will always remain steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding their rights," the top diplomat of the Maldives said.
This commitment reflects a deeper bilateral maturity, as this year’s celebrations coincide with the 48th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Malé and Dhaka. Minister Khaleel characterised the partnership as one rooted in mutual respect and robust interpersonal connections, citing Bangladesh’s role in advancing Maldivian society through vital training in commerce, education, and public health.
The success of these collaborative efforts mirrors the broader rise of Bangladesh since it declared sovereignty on 26 March 1971. Reflecting on these historical strides, Minister Khaleel projected a future of deepening ties, assuring that the diplomatic and economic foundations shared by the two nations are poised for further expansion in the coming years.
