President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the government will always work to ensure a safe and secure environment for all citizens.
The President made the remark in a statement released by the President’s Office following an attempted attack on Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim during a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest in Male’ City.
The statement said the President strongly condemned the incident after seeing a video. The government stressed that elected officials must not be attacked or obstructed, whether during political activities or in their personal lives.
Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef also gave a statement to the media rejecting claims made by the mayor that the government was behind the attack. He described the mayor’s accusation as false and questioned what evidence the accusations were based on. He stressed that the government was not linked to the attack and said the allegations were baseless.
The spokesperson also expressed concern that the incident was not officially reported to the police by any relevant body, including the MDP. Noting that the police are legally responsible for ensuring public safety, he said the ack of reporting hinders them carrying out their duties. The police began investigating the incident on their own accord after seeing the video on social media.
The spokesperson said the mayor is eligible for state-provided security if requested. Police conduct threat assessments and will arrange protection independently if a risk is identified, he assured.
