Subsidised fuel for fishermen expanded to nine new locations

Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has said subsidised fuel sold to fishermen is now available in 13 locations across the Maldives, including nine newly introduced sites.

He made the statement while speaking at a press conference held by the Special Cabinet Committee, established by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Efforts are underway to ensure all fishing vessels across the Maldives can access affordable fuel, regardless of location. The government is working to make affordable fuel available for fishermen in three additional atolls, the minister said.

Minister Shiyam stressed that higher oil prices affect not just fishermen and their families, but the entire population, increasing overall economic pressure. Therefore, the government aims to keep fishing operations running, ensuring boats can continue going out to sea despite global fuel price increases.

The minister noted that fishing activity has improved since 14 April. He said the government is working to ensure that all vessels that hold fishing licences are able to go out to sea.

The minister further said fish processors and exporters are facing difficulties, especially due to high air freight costs. However, exports are still continuing despite this, he noted.

Rising oil prices are linked to ongoing unrest in the Middle East, affecting import costs. Over 1.1 million litres of fuel have already been supplied to fishermen under the subsidised fuel programme.
