Efforts are under way to train Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard officers to dive to depths of 100 metres, Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem said, an initiative designed to enhance operational capacity and mitigate the significant risks military divers face during maritime search and rescue operations.
Speaking on the PSM News programme ‘Raajje Miadhu’ regarding maritime safety, Brigadier General Saleem noted that military divers are currently qualified to reach depths of only 50 metres. To address this limitation, vital initiatives utilising assistance from both the government and neighbouring nations are being implemented to complete this advanced training before the close of the year.
"Under the government's initiative, a specialised programme has been launched this year to elevate our divers to a proficiency level allowing them to reach depths of 100 metres,” Brigadier General Saleem said. “The second phase of this operational training is scheduled to commence this month. We are actively working to ensure the required personnel are fully trained prior to the close of the year."
While the Maldives remains a safe destination, Brigadier General Saleem observed that the paramount concern is strict adherence to regulations. Lieutenant Colonel Ali Niyaz underscored that the critical importance of formulating a comprehensive dive plan cannot be overstated. To safeguard personnel, Lieutenant Colonel Niyaz explained, thorough evaluations of safety protocols, equipment integrity, and environmental conditions are essential.
"Dives extending beyond 30 metres in depth are complex operations that strictly require the deployment of specialised equipment,” Lieutenant Colonel Niyaz said. “Personnel must also acquire distinct, advanced training to execute them safely. When dives are conducted without adequate consideration for these critical prerequisites, adverse incidents do occur, albeit rarely. Managing these sophisticated maritime matters is far from a simple endeavor."
To guarantee security, dive boat operators and instructors must exercise significant vigilance, Lieutenant Colonel Niyaz said, operating in accordance with established regulations to ensure the absolute protection of divers, particularly during inclement weather.
