HPA warns to take precautions against diseases during holiday season

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has warned the public to take precautions against diseases during the holiday season.

A statement issued by the agency said dengue and respiratory illnesses, including common cold and influenza, are increasing across the country. Several measles cases have also been reported in the Male’ area. The HPA noted that holiday travel abroad, visits to islands and crowded gatherings could increase the spread of diseases.

Some precautionary measures advised by HPA include staying home if experiencing symptoms of fever or respiratory illness, and avoiding public places and activities. Those whose conditions worsen are advised to seek medical care promptly, wear masks when visiting healthcare facilities and avoid public transport. Those suspected of having measles are advised to isolate themselves until test results are received.

The agency also advised wearing masks in crowded places such as airports, ferry terminals and public transport, and maintaining hand hygiene. The HPA also encouraged people to complete vaccinations for preventable diseases.

To prevent mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue, the public is advised to use mosquito repellent, wear protective clothing, use mosquito nets, cover doors and windows, and remove mosquito breeding areas.

The HPA urged the public to rely on official sources for health-related information.
