UNICEF Executive Board concludes official visit to the Maldives

The Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has concluded its official visit to the Maldives. The visit took place from 30 May to 2 June 2026. 

During the visit, the delegation gained insights into UNICEF’s ongoing work in the Maldives, as well as the country’s unique development context as a Small Island Developing State, including its dispersed geography and climate vulnerability.

The delegation called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs; the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development; the Minister of Climate Change and Environment and Energy; and the Minister of Health, Family and Welfare. The delegation also met with key national institutions, including the Maldives Police Service, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Children’s Ombudsperson, and members of the judiciary.

During the visit, the delegation also undertook field visits to Gaafaru, Kaafu Atoll, and Vilimale;’, where they engaged with local stakeholders, including school communities and Island Council representatives. They also observed ongoing programmes such as the Techpath digital learning initiative, and met with young people, civil society organisations, and the diplomatic community resident in the Maldives.

The UNICEF Executive Board is the governing body of the United Nations Children’s Fund, which provides intergovernmental support and oversight to the organization. The Executive Board is comprised of 36 members, representing the five regional groups of Member States at the United Nations.
