The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has launched a training programme for island councils on the Construction Act and related regulations.
The programme, which runs from 7 June until the 11 June, was officially launched at a ceremony at the SHE Building in Male’, attended by Deputy Minister Yoosuf Sidgee.
Participants include heads and staff of islands councils from six atolls, including Baa, Lhaviyani, Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll and Vaavu Atoll. The programme is part of a series of efforts by the ministry to raise awareness among the construction industry and the public regarding the relevant laws. It seeks to improve understanding of construction laws to help manage island construction projects within legal frameworks.
The sessions will cover building permits and approval processes, drawing approvals and licensing, import and control of construction materials, site safety regulation, rules for building in lagoon areas in islands without planning regulations and other related information, as well as handling violations and contractor responsibilities.
One of the most important objectives of the Building Act is to ensure safe construction practices and support a National Building Code to clearly define the responsibilities and rights of those involved in the construction field and standardise quality.
