A dedicated ‘Calm Room’ has been opened at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA) for passengers with non-visible disabilities.
The development is part of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL)‘s efforts to improve accessibility and support services to those with special needs under its social responsibility programme.
The facility was inaugurated by MACL’s Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed. Officials from Maldives Autism Association, Autism Care Maldives and MACL were in attendance at the ceremony.
The room is designed under MACL’s “BOLI” programme, inspired by similar airport accessibility initiatives worldwide, and seeks to provide a quiet, sensory-friendly space to reduce stress and discomfort in the airport environment. The room includes sensory tools and activities to help passengers feel more comfortable. An accompanying parent or guardian can stay with the passenger in the room. Eligible users will receive a special card and lanyard for easier identification and faster assistance.
MACL aims to make VIA more inclusive and passenger-friendly for everyone.
