Ooredoo Maldives has officially introduced PayPal services to the Maldives, aligning with a primary pledge from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The service, formally inaugurated by President Muizzu at the Barceló Nasandhura Malé hotel, fulfills his central promise to introduce e-wallets featuring modern payment systems.
Amir Valliani, PayPal’s vice president and general manager, stated that the platform will connect individuals and businesses securely, representing an essential step for the administartion’s 'Maldives 2.0' vision. Valliani described the initiative as a vital opportunity for freelancers and entrepreneurs that elevates economic diversification.
The inward remittance licence was granted in October 2025 to Techfin Maldives, an Ooredoo Maldives subsidiary, followed by testing earlier this year. The service operates via Ooredoo m-Faisaa through a seamless integration. Shadi Qawasmi, Ooredoo chief executive and managing director, remarked that the milestone drives the nation's digital connectivity and provides momentum to build a robust digital economy, noting that as the country journey toward a digital Maldives, this marks a crucial step. Consequently, individuals gain expanded international opportunities, Qawasmi added.
While Ooredoo Maldives spearheaded operational implementation, the project was a highly prioritised administration initiative. The government initially disclosed in August 2024 that it had submitted a proposal to secure the platform. Following deployment, the Maldives is now officially recognised among the region's most advanced digital economies.
