The Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Dr Ismail Shafeeu has revealed that one of the government’s foremost objectives is to foster a patriotic, united, and happy community across the Maldives.
Speaking as the guest of honour at the award ceremony for the Independence Day art and photography competition—jointly organised by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage and the National Centre for the Arts—Minister Ismail Shafeeu emphasised the pivotal role such events play in nurturing national pride among students.
Reflecting on the artwork and photographs on display, the Minister said that by commemorating the heroes who secured Maldives’ independence, the government is instilling a sense of duty and reverence that is essential for building a cohesive society.
Minister Ismail Shafeeu highlighted recent governmental initiatives aimed at honouring public servants and revitalising the national spirit, urging students to emulate the sacrifices of their forebears.
“The independence of the Maldivian nation is a matter of great significance. Your ancestors brought this nation to where it is today through immense sacrifice and extraordinary courage. To pass this on to coming generations, you must roll up your sleeves. You must persevere and renew your resolve in your hearts—to be loyal to the Maldivian nation, to uphold its honour and dignity, and to work faithfully to ensure this nation is passed on to the generations after you,” he urged
The Minister also warned against derogatory remarks concerning national heroes, appealing to schools, parents, and the wider public to protect the legacy of those who fought for the country’s freedom. He called for educational programmes that teach students about the noble service and sacrifices of Maldivian patriots, ensuring that the spirit of independence endures for future generations.
