President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has forwarded two names to the Parliament for appointment to the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board, following an open application process launched by the President’s Office last month.
The submissions come ahead of the September expiry of three incumbent board members’ terms.
From the pool of applicants across multiple sectors, the President selected Aishath Arifa for the seat reserved for a female expert in gender equality, and Mohamed Arif for the position requiring expertise in governance or public administration.
The President’s Office had also invited applications for a civil‑society‑organisation representative, a slot that remains to be filled.
The nine‑member LGA Board comprises the Cabinet Minister accountable to Parliament, the gender‑equality and governance experts, a civil‑society delegate, elected officials from city councils, Women’s Development Committees, island councils, a Ministry of Finance staff designated by the finance minister, and the Authority’s CEO appointed by the President.
Parliament will now review the nominations before confirming the appointments, ensuring the LGA Board reflects the mandated balance of expertise and representation ahead of the upcoming term renewal.
