Maldives and Palau discuss climate change and sustainable tourism

The Maldives and Palau have discussed ways to strengthen cooperation on climate change and sustainable tourism, as the two island nations seek to advance shared priorities for Small Island Developing States.

Palau’s Minister of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism and Development, Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl, paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and Island Investment Forum, which began in the Maldives.

The two sides discussed common challenges and opportunities facing SIDS, including the impact of climate change and the development of sustainable tourism.

They also highlighted the importance of closer cooperation and creating investment opportunities that can support sustainable development across small island states.

President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to working closely with Palau to advance the priorities of SIDS and strengthen their collective voice internationally.

The SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and Island Investment Forum is being held from 23 to 25 August, bringing together representatives from the public, private and development sectors.

The forum aims to promote innovative and inclusive partnerships to support sustainable and resilient development in SIDS.
