Parliament approves two appointments to LGA board

Parliament has approved two nominees proposed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for appointment to the board of the Local Government Authority (LGA).

President Dr Muizzu submitted the names of the two nominees to Parliament on 10 August after selecting them from among candidates who applied for the positions of Parliament-appointed members of the LGA board.

The nominations cover two positions on the board: a female member with experience in gender equality and a member with experience in governance or public administration.

For the gender equality position, President Dr Muizzu nominated Aishath Arifa of Thiburoazge, Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo. For the position requiring experience in governance or public administration, he nominated Mohamed Arif of Rayvilla, Shaviyani Kanditheemu.

Parliament's Decentralisation Committee considered the two nominations at a meeting held today. After interviewing both nominees, Vilufushi Member of Parliament Hassan Waheed proposed approving their appointments, as both had received average interview scores of more than 75 marks.

Following the committee's approval, Parliament held separate votes on the two appointments. Members of Parliament attending the sitting unanimously approved Mohamed Arif's appointment, while 48 Members of Parliament voted to approve Aishath Arifa's appointment.

The LGA board consists of nine members. The board includes the minister appointed by the President to be accountable to Parliament for the purpose specified under Article 140 of the Constitution; a female member with experience in gender equality; a member with experience in governance or public administration; a member representing a civil society organisation; a member elected from among city councillors; a member elected from among the presidents of women's development committees; a member elected from among island councillors; an employee of the office designated by the minister responsible for financial matters; and the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority appointed by the President.
