The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a high-alert warning as the El Niño climate phenomenon rapidly strengthens across the Pacific Ocean, threatening critical ecosystems and vital economic industries in the Maldives.
According to the latest meteorological data, sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific have surged to 2.0 °C above average, while the critical Niño 3.4 Index reached 1.8 °C by the middle of this month. With oceanic and atmospheric conditions continuing to reflect classic El Niño patterns, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) forecasts that the phenomenon will persist and strengthen through the end of the year.
The meteorological agency is closely monitoring the situation, noting that the island nation's extreme vulnerability to climate change puts several key sectors at immediate risk. Unusually high sea temperatures pose severe threats to marine life and coral reefs, setting the stage for widespread coral bleaching that could directly undermine the nation's reef-based eco-tourism.
Additionally, shifting wind patterns and altered ocean currents are disrupting marine layers and reducing the upwelling of nutrient-rich deep water. Historical data indicates these changes disrupt the habitats of skipjack and yellowfin tuna, leading to significant declines in fish catches—a devastating blow to the local fishing industry. The agricultural sector is similarly threatened by altered rainfall patterns that disrupt traditional crop cycles, while soaring temperatures are expected to drive up energy demand for cooling, straining national electricity grids.
To help mitigate these impacts, the MET Office has released predictive statistical maps outlining expected rainfall and temperature trends for the Maldives from September through November.
For September, below-normal rainfall is anticipated in the northern atolls, while central and southern regions are projected to see above-normal precipitation. In October and November, above-normal rainfall is forecasted for the northern and central atolls, contrasting with below-normal rainfall in the southernmost atolls.
