The expansion of sports fishing in the Maldives will open up a wealth of opportunities for private businesses, Mohamed Muththalib, the Minister of State for Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, said. The initiative to introduce the sector, State Minister Muththalib noted during an appearance on PSM News's 'Raajje Miadhu' programme, represents a highly significant undertaking launched under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Sports fishing is practised extensively worldwide, and its domestic development represents a notable advancement for both fisheries and tourism. The country already sustains a sizeable angling community, with the initiative intended to open commercial pathways for local citizens. "The benefit that the general public will receive from this is that we have a very large sports fishing community," State Minister Muththalib observed, explaining that "there is currently no way to develop this on a commercial basis."
Under the operational model, speedboat operators based on adjacent islands will take tourists staying on nearby islands out fishing. Visiting tourists will also lodge on host islands, where local businesses will supply tackle, marine fuel, and dedicated vessel repair facilities within central harbour zones.
Authorities are deploying dedicated fish aggregating devices and designating five regions for specialised harbours. Active projects are proceeding at Bohchufaru in Kaafu Atoll, Maadhiggaru Lagoon in Vaavu Atoll, Bolimathaidhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Maafaru in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. These waterfront complexes will feature fish stalls, administrative offices to plan tournaments, restaurants, cafés, tackle outlets, and barbecue facilities, providing commercial ventures for citizens.
