The Maldives Police Service will provide its full cooperation on the ground to implement the 12 points agreed upon at a forum targeting the four southern atolls to find a permanent solution to the drug crisis, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed said. These remarks were delivered during the closing ceremony of the 'Inter-Agency Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Forum: Revisiting Gaps and Recovery in the South', held from 6 to 7 September at the Canareef Resort in Addu City.
The 12 points represent crucial decisions bringing significant progress across the southern atolls and the entire Maldives, the commissioner observed. The drug problem is not confined to a single island or atoll, he maintained, but is a "major national crisis" requiring collective action from the state and society. He commended the invaluable cooperation of the Drug Court, the National Drug Agency (NDA), and the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Efforts must ensure the public sees "tangible results" rather than leaving academic insights on paper as "mere discussions," the commissioner insisted, pledging complete police cooperation. The fight against drugs is a "religious and national obligation," he noted, thanking the administration and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for prioritising counter-narcotics resources. The police will support non-governmental organisations, he affirmed, while urging similar forums across other regions.
Attendees included the Chief Judge of the Drug Court, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NDA, Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikury, the South Police Commander, executive police officers, and heads of relevant state bodies.
