The Maldives National University (MNU) has signed a landmark agreement with the Maldives Physiotherapy Association, in a significant step toward bolstering the nation's healthcare sector.
Formalised during a special ceremony commemorating World Physical Therapy Day, the partnership aims to elevate the standard of physiotherapy education, foster sustainable professional relationships, and expand specialised services across the archipelago.
According to MNU, the core objective of the collaboration is to advance higher education, drive professional development, and encourage scientific research in physiotherapy. The initiative arrives at a critical juncture for the Maldivian healthcare system, which is facing an increased demand for rehabilitation services driven by a rising prevalence of chronic illnesses and an aging population. MNU officials emphasised that physiotherapy is vital not only for patient recovery and mobility, but also for preventative healthcare and long-term public well-being.
Under the terms of the new agreement, MNU and the Physiotherapy Association will collaborate to deliver international-standard education and training programmes, cultivating a highly qualified cadre of local professionals.
The partnership will also facilitate the exchange of academic research and technical expertise, with a strong focus on decentralising rehabilitation services. By extending these critical health services to the atolls, the initiative promises to ease the burden on residents who have historically faced barriers in accessing specialised care, marking a major milestone in the nation's healthcare accessibility.
