First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for greater collaboration to empower healthcare professionals and ensure patients receive the safety and support they need.
In a social media post marking World Patient Safety Day, First Lady Sajidha said patient safety plays an important role in building a resilient healthcare system.
Noting that non-communicable diseases account for a significant share of the Maldives’ health burden, she said this year’s World Patient Safety Day theme, “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases”, highlights the importance of providing safe, timely and quality care throughout prevention, treatment and long-term management.
She stressed the importance of providing services and support to people living with non-communicable diseases at every stage of their care. She also highlighted the need for timely access to quality healthcare services, early detection of diseases and systems that ensure continuity of care.
The First Lady said she was proud of the progress the Maldives has made in protecting patients’ safety.
She noted that managing non-communicable diseases is a lifelong journey and said patients should receive safety, support and care throughout every stage of that journey.
Concluding her message, she called for collective efforts to empower healthcare professionals and provide them with the necessary support, while working together to build a safe environment for patients.
World Patient Safety Day is observed annually on 17 September to raise awareness and reduce preventable harm and other patient-safety issues in healthcare.
