Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the government’s measures are producing results and that current financial and economic difficulties will be resolved.
Condemning negative reporting that could be detrimental to the country’s economy, Minister Saeed responded to calls on social media and newspapers against investment in the Maldives and said any negative impacts on tourism would affect citizens. Opposing parties in other countries do not conduct themselves in such ways, he added.
The minister also rejected claims that the Maldives could face shortages of essentials such as staple foods, oil and gas after debt repayments, assuring that these goods will remain available. He accused those making such claims of trying to create public doubt and undermine confidence in the market.
On debt repayments, the minister said repayment for some obligations, including Chinese government loans, Abu Dhabi Fund financing and certain sovereign-guaranteed loans, have been deferred as part of efforts to manage debt repayments.
