President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Maldives is ready to take on greater responsibility in shaping the United Nations, as the country marks 61 years of membership in the organisation.
In a message marking the anniversary, President Muizzu said the Maldives joined the UN in 1965 seeking recognition and partnership but has now reached a stage where it is prepared to play a greater role in shaping the organisation and contributing to a resilient global future.
He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to advocating for meaningful reform of the UN and equitable representation within the organisation, while advancing the priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The President said the Maldives would continue working with the UN to ensure that the voices of SIDS contribute meaningfully to shaping an equitable and climate-resilient global economy.
He highlighted the Maldives’ advocacy for climate resilience, sustainable solutions to debt and debt sustainability, improved access to adequate and affordable financing, including for climate adaptation, and greater opportunities for SIDS to develop their capacities.
Reflecting on six decades of UN membership, President Muizzu highlighted the organisation’s contribution to the Maldives’ development, including support for the country’s graduation from Least Developed Country status.
He said the partnership remains important as the Maldives works towards its ambition of becoming a fully developed nation by 2040.
President Muizzu also highlighted the Maldives’ growing engagement within the UN system, including its service as Vice-President of the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council, as well as its forthcoming membership of the Commission on the Status of Women and the Economic and Social Council.
He also noted the Maldives’ pursuit of elections to the Human Rights Council and the Security Council.
Reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to international law and the UN Charter, the President stressed the importance of diplomacy, dialogue and inclusive multilateral governance in addressing increasingly complex global challenges.
