Zakat al-Mal collection surpasses last year’s total in just nine months

The Maldives Zakat House has announced that the total amount of Zakat al-Mal (wealth Zakat) collected so far this year has already surpassed the entire amount received in 2025.

With three months still remaining in the year, collections have reached a significant milestone, signaling robust public compliance with the obligatory Islamic practice.

According to official statistics, a total USD 7.1 was collected by the end of September. This represents an increase of USD 181,968.53—or 2.64 percent—compared to the USD 6.9 million accumulated during the entirety of 2025.

State authorities collect Zakat al-Mal in both Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) and US Dollars (USD). Of the total revenue collected by the end of last month, USD 7.1 was received in local currency, alongside direct payments of USD 34,021.41. Because Zakat al-Mal can be paid at any time of the year, the Zakat House expects the total collection to increase substantially by the end of December.

As a core pillar of Islam, Zakat al-Mal is a religious obligation upon every individual whose personal wealth meets or exceeds a minimum threshold, known as the Nisaab, and has been held for one full lunar year. The Maldives Zakat House confirmed that as of 20 September, the Nisaab threshold for Zakat al-Mal stands at USD 1,249.42.

In the Maldives, the collection of Zakat is officially managed by the state tax authority, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). To streamline the process, MIRA provides digital payment services, allowing citizens to easily calculate and fulfill their Zakat obligations online via the tax authority’s official portal.
