The Maldives has spent approximately USD 3.84 million on financial assistance for people with disabilities, according to statistics released by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA).
NSPA statistics show that, as of the end of September 2026, a total of 15,885 people were registered in the national disability registry, comprising 6,710 women and 9,175 men. Of these, 263 people were newly registered during the period.
A total of 5,396 registered people with disabilities were under the age of 19, including 1,659 females and 3,737 males. Among those aged 18 to 64, there were 8,095 registered individuals, comprising 4,150 men and 3,944 women. Meanwhile, 2,395 people aged 65 and above were registered, including 1,288 men and 1,107 women.
According to the NSPA, the registered population includes 4,270 people with physical disabilities, 3,585 with multiple disabilities, 1,812 with intellectual or cognitive disabilities, 2,626 with psychosocial disabilities, 1,897 with hearing and speech disabilities, 1,043 with visual disabilities, 594 with autism and 61 with learning disabilities.
Financial assistance totalling USD 3.84 million has been provided to 15,571 people with disabilities. In addition, USD 313,496 was allocated to support therapeutic treatment for 157 people with disabilities during the period.
Under the thalassaemia allowance scheme, assistance was provided to 541 people, including six newly approved recipients. A total of USD 70,169 was disbursed under the scheme.
Assistance was also provided to 3,313 single parents raising children while living in poverty. This included 31 newly registered parents and 119 children. A total of 5,708 children are receiving financial assistance, with USD 1.11 million allocated for this purpose.
Regarding removals from the social protection registry, the agency reported that financial assistance had been discontinued for 22 women and 27 men who were previously registered as people with disabilities and receiving support. In addition, 84 beneficiaries who had previously received allowances for single parents raising children were removed from the relevant registry.
