Foreign Minister to attend OIC meeting in Iraq

Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam has departed for Iraq to attend the 52nd Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers.

The main agenda for the visit includes advocating for Palestinian rights and strengthening economic and social ties among member states.

The session will call on all member states to support the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. It will also seek to strengthen measures to protect the Palestinian people and ensure their effective implementation through a comprehensive action plan.

In addition, discussions will focus on addressing the economic challenges facing Islamic countries as a result of conflicts, including difficulties in securing food and essential commodities. The meeting will also seek to enhance cooperation among member states in agriculture, technology, digitalisation, healthcare and social development.

The Maldives marks 50 years of membership in the OIC this year. During the visit, Foreign Minister Iruthisham is also scheduled to hold discussions with her Iraqi counterpart, as well as other foreign ministers, to explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations.
