Maldives-Pakistan trade targeted to reach USD 200 million within two years

Bilateral trade between the Maldives and Pakistan is targeted to increase from the current USD 13.9 million to USD 200 million within the next two years, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has announced.

Prime Minister Sharif outlined the target during a joint press statement with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in Islamabad, as the President continues his visit to Pakistan.

Reflecting on their discussions, Prime Minister Sharif noted that the two leaders had addressed several important regional and international issues. He reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to strengthening economic ties with the Maldives and providing assistance to train Maldivians in defence, education and healthcare.

As part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation, the Prime Minister emphasised that Pakistan would give special priority to ensuring the implementation of the 20 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed between the two countries.

Turning to bilateral trade, Prime Minister Sharif acknowledged the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Pakistan but noted that their current economic ties did not adequately reflect the strength of that partnership. He therefore highlighted the importance of expanding trade and strengthening economic cooperation.

To advance these efforts, the Prime Minister pledged to strengthen trade relations and accelerate the implementation of the MoUs. He assured the Maldives that Pakistan stood ready to provide assistance to the greatest extent possible in meeting the country's needs.

Beyond the economic commitments, Prime Minister Sharif welcomed President Dr Muizzu, describing the opportunity to receive him as an honour for Pakistan. He expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to strengthen.

As the Maldives and Pakistan approach 60 years of diplomatic relations, the Prime Minister expressed hope that cooperation would deepen across various sectors. He described their relationship as close, brotherly and longstanding, reflecting the history of cooperation between the two countries.

The Maldives and Pakistan have maintained longstanding cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure development and strategic affairs.
