The Maldives has held a special programme in China to support the development of nurseries to produce trees for the national five-million-tree planting programme.
The five-million-tree programme is a key initiative announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to restore trees and vegetation that are disappearing or threatened with extinction in the Maldives, increase greenery across the islands and protect the environment and ecosystems. The programme was officially launched on World Environment Day in 2024.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy said an orientation session was held in Fujian Province, China, for the first 10 participants selected for the Nursery Management Preparatory Programme. The programme aims to support the development of nurseries across different regions of the Maldives.
The initiative is designed to strengthen the technical capacity of nursery operators to manage and maintain nurseries established to increase vegetation across the country, improve environmental greenery and advance the agricultural sector.
The first phase of the training programme was conducted with 10 participants selected from the Maldives.
During the orientation session in Fujian Province, participants were briefed on the details of the upcoming training and key considerations for managing nurseries in line with modern standards.
The ministry said the programme would equip participants with the technical experience and skills needed to ensure the sustainable management of nurseries being developed across different regions of the Maldives.
