The Maldives is seeking to join two UNESCO conventions aimed at facilitating the international recognition of higher education qualifications, following approval by the Cabinet.
The Cabinet approved the proposal at its meeting on Sunday, 1 November, covering the Asia-Pacific Regional Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education, known as the Tokyo Convention, and the Global Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will submit the proposal to Parliament for approval, in accordance with Article 93(a) of the Constitution.
The proposed move follows a national assessment conducted by UNESCO to examine the benefits and implications of joining the two conventions. UNESCO and the Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) also jointly conducted a mission and held consultations with relevant stakeholders to gather their views.
The assessment found that participation in the conventions would help bring the Maldives' higher education sector in line with international standards while facilitating the entry of international students and academic staff into the country.
It is also expected to create greater opportunities for Maldivian students to pursue higher education overseas and return with qualifications recognised internationally.
