Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the Maldives Expo 2026 has successfully achieved its objectives.
Speaking in a special interview with PSM News on the success of the expo, which is the largest of its kind ever held in the Maldives, Minister Saeed said the event had provided a platform to promote local production and expand business opportunities.
The Expo was held under the leadership and guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, with the aim of strengthening domestic production and expanding business activities. It was the largest exhibition of its kind organised in the Maldives, focusing on local producers.
Highlighting the expo’s success, Minister Saeed said its achievements were best reflected in the experiences of those who visited it. He noted that the event showcased the extensive efforts of Maldivians across various sectors. Participants from all atolls presented a wide range of innovative products and initiatives, reflecting the ideas, aspirations and creativity of local communities.
Speaking about the expectations of participants, the Minister said many people who had never previously ventured into business were now seeking to establish businesses through opportunities such as the expo. Existing businesses, meanwhile, were looking to expand their operations, while entirely new entrants had also taken part.
He said the most pressing need shared by all participants was access to suitable markets for their products and services.
"If something can be taken away from this expo, it is that the expo has been a great success. We received many requests to extend its duration and allow more days for this initiative. This means we should not stop here. However, such an event can only be held for a certain period. All of this demonstrates its success," Minister Saeed said.
The Minister added that expanding market access for local products and driving economic growth were also key priorities of the President. In this regard, the Government aims to increase the creative economy's contribution to 15 per cent of the Maldives' gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030.
Held from 25 October to 2 November, the expo took place every evening and night. It was the largest and most widely attended exhibition of its kind in the Maldives in recent history.
The event showcased the richness of Maldivian cultural and traditional craftsmanship, alongside a diverse range of locally produced food items and services offered by businesses. Visitors were also able to learn about the various products and services available through the exhibition's numerous stalls.
