Securing sustainable financial support for 2027–2029 and strengthening environmental monitoring systems are among the key issues discussed at the preparatory meeting for the 38th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 38) to the Montreal Protocol, with the Maldives represented at the meeting.
The discussions also focus on strengthening the institutional framework of the Montreal Protocol and ensuring the full implementation of decisions made under the agreement.
The meeting is particularly significant as it marks the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment, which was adopted to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
The Maldivian delegation comprises Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Miruza Mohamed; Principal International Relations Officer Fathimath Usra; and Senior Chemicals Management Officer Nafha Abbas.
Participants are also discussing ways to strengthen regional systems for monitoring atmospheric changes to support the implementation of international environmental commitments.
The Maldives has consistently participated in international efforts to protect the environment, particularly initiatives aimed at safeguarding the ozone layer. Its participation in the MOP 38 preparatory meeting reflects its continued engagement in global efforts to address climate change and environmental challenges.
