Edu. Min. meets students attending tsunami awareness summit

Education Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham on Monday met with local students selected to participate in the High School Students Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day to be held in Kuroshio, Japan.

The summit is to be held from November 25th to 26th at Kuroshio in Shikoku’s Kochi Prefecture, Japan, as part of the educational activities on World Tsunami Awareness Day. High school students from 30 countries, including the Maldives, will participate in the Summit for discussions and presentations about disaster risk reduction. The summit aims at teaching the risk of tsunamis, which is common issue to be addressed by many countries, and sharing knowledge about disaster risk reduction to train future leaders who can minimize the risk impact of damages by tsunamis.

Meeting the students, Education Minister Dr Aishath Shiham said that 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was the biggest natural disaster to hit the country, and noted the efforts being made since then to prepare for such disasters.

She also noted the important role played by the Maldives in bringing the world’s attention to the negative impacts of climate change.

6 students from the Centre for Higher Secondary Education and a leading teacher are representing the Maldives at the summit.
