Land plot handed over for establishing waste management facility

The Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure on Tuesday handed over a land plot to the Ministry of Environment and Energy for the development of a waste management centre at Male’ Industrial Village.

The land plot was officially handed over by Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a special function held at Male’ Industrial Village area.

Speaking at the function, Minister Muizzu said the proposed waste management centre is one of the most important establishments of Male’ Industrial Village, adding that the biggest land area is allocated for the project.

After accepting the plot, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said that work on establishing the waste management facility will commence as soon as possible and the project will be carried out in collaboration with Waste Management Company-WAMCO.

He expressed hope that the facility will ease the solid waste management problem faced by Male’ City.

The Government plans to relocate garages, industrial workshops, dump yard, and chemical storage facilities in Malé to the industrial village, and it is expected to provide a huge gratification to the people living in Malé.

The industrial village is being developed on 6.9 hectares of reclaimed land on the south-western side of Male’. The project is contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company.
