President Yameen decides to pardon some inmates

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has decided to pardon a number of inmates who are imprisoned for minor offences.

Speaking on PSM’s “Raajje Miadhu” programme, Minister of Home affairs, Azleen Ahmed said that the president’s vision is not to let those who commit crimes in the country to be imprisoned for long periods of time, but to release those who undergo rehabilitation process.

“President has decided to pardon most of the inmates under special conditions, who are serving sentences for crimes not considered grave or dangerous such as murder,” Minister Azleen said, adding that “the exact number, names and the date of release, as well as the conditions which would apply to the inmates would be finalised and announced.”

Minister Azleen also said the government is currently working on forming the regulations and amending the laws, to carry out the process.
