Government condemns the murder of the Social Media Activist

In a press release issued today, the President’s Office has said that President Abdulla Yameen Abul Gayoom has condemned the brutal murder of the social media activist and blogger Yameen Rasheed, who was found dead with multiple stab wounds in the early hours of this morning. The President’s Office has also stated that all the Government’s resources will be utilized to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. 

President Yameen has sent his condolences to the family of Yameen Rasheed. 

The Serious and Organised Crime Department of the Maldives Police Service is investigating the murder. In a press release issued today, the Maldives Police said that the investigation is given highest priority. The Police has requested the public for assistance and to come forward with any information that might be useful for the investigation. The Maldives Police Service also assured the public and the family of the victim that it will ‘utilise all resources needed to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice, and create a safer environment for the people of the Maldives’. 

Following the brutal murder of Yameen Rasheed, the Government has ordered a review of the operating procedures that are used for investigating serious cases of this nature. The purpose of the review is to ensure that the warnings that journalists and other individuals receive are acted swiftly and in manner that ensures safety for everyone. The Government also ensures that it will take whatever measures necessary for the protection and security of the general public.
