Construction of harbor in Kulhudhuffushi to begin this year

Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has said that the construction of the harbor in Kulhudhuffushi Island of Haa Dhaalu Atoll will begin this year.

The Ministry of Housing is preparing to begin implementation of the harbor construction project in the island of Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has already granted necessary funding for the project.

Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that there were no issues regarding funds for the implementation for the harbor construction project in Kulhudhuffushi Island. Work is now at an advanced stage and the harbor is to be constructed in the newly reclaimed area on the island, according to the Ministry. They assured that the consultancy stage would be completed within a couple of months after which a contractor would be sought. The Ministry estimates the project to cost approximately twelve million U.S. dollars.

While preparations are underway to begin construction of the harbor by the end of the year, an environmental impact assessment has already been conducted. The Ministry maintains that with the construction of the harbor, the reclaimed area would be protected. The government has planned various developmental projects, targeting Kulhudhuffushi Island, including a domestic airport.
