Newly elected councilors to take oath of office on June 3

Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced that elected councilors would be taking oath of office on the 3rd of June.

Director at LGA Adam Shareef said that preparations for swearing in of newly elected councilors, are already underway. He noted that it would be difficult to swear in all councilors simultaneously but that it would be done on the same day.

Noting that the law mandates councilors to take their oath of office in front of a judge, Shareef said that all inhabited islands in Maldives do not have courts or magistrate courts. He said that therefore, negotiations are being held with the Supreme Court to arrange for councilors in islands where judges reside to be sworn in first, after which the same judges would be sent to other islands.

Newly elected councils are supposed to formulate five year plans for the development of their respective administrative areas.

664 councilors were elected in the 2017 Local Council Election.
