Government pledges support to ACC efforts combat corruption

Vice President Abdulla Jihad has pledged to provide all necessary support and assistance from the government in order to combat corruption through consolidation of the criminal justice system and via human resource development. He made the statement, inaugurating the First National Symposium on Anti-Corruption.

The First National Symposium on Anti-Corruption is being conducted with the objectives of putting an end to corruption, recovering funds which were misappropriated from the state as a result of corruption, find ways to overcome obstacles faced in taking equal and just action against those who carry out acts of corruption.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Vice President Abdulla Jihad said that all institutions in the criminal justice system need to work in unity towards achieving these objectives.

He assured that the government would not encourage acts of corruption in government backed developmental projects and stated that development should come sans corruption. He also assured that the government would take action against any such act. Expressing hope that the symposium would give rise to new perspectives in combatting corruption, the Vice President said that the government was fully committed to efforts at weeding out corruption.

Addressing the inaugural function, President of Anti-Corruption Commission Hassan Luthufee said that although the commission has been criticized the commission functions within legal limitations. He said that work carried out by the commission so far stands proof to its integrity. He assured that any case filed with the commission regarding allegations of corruption would be investigated without any prejudice.

The First National Symposium on Anti-Corruption is being conducted in association with Public Service Media PSM, Fenaka Corporation, Maldives Airports Company Limited and Maldives Water and Sewerage Company.

Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stressed on the importance of publicizing the decisions made in this symposium via media. He expressed hope that constructive discussions in this symposium would lead to important decisions.

In the two day symposium, ACC would present a paper on the current situation in the country and on the National Integrity Plan, which is being formulated by the commission. The Attorney General’s Office, Maldives Police Service, Auditor General’s Office and Maldives Monetary Authority would also present papers at the symposium.
