City Councils not popular in Maldives: Fisheries Minister

Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee has said that city councils are not popular among locals, due to how past administrations has operated.

Speaking on a talk show aired by PSM News last night, he said that it was hard for the administration to proceed with the former regulations and that the regulations had to be amended Furthermore, he said that the councils at many times did several activities to irritate the current administration. He added that the councils mostly act as a huge barrier for the development projects of the administration.

Speaking more on the topic, Minister Shainee stated that even if the councils act as an obstacle the government will continue its work on developmental projects. He also said that the citizens would need time to adjust to the local governance system. Minister stressed that the result of the local council elections would not cause any hindrances to any development project of the government.

Preliminary results of the 2017 Local Council Election shows a low voter turnout in the cities, compared to earlier elections.
