Waste management centres to be established in all islands

Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has said that a waste management centre would be established in all inhabited islands before 2018.

The waste management project will be implemented by dividing the atolls into zones where regional waste management systems would be established.

At the press conference held to provide information regarding waste management projects of the government, the Environment Minister said that managing waste is a nationwide issue that needs to be tackled. Minister Thoriq said that the government has been working continuously in order to establish sustainable waste management systems across the country.

Furthermore, he expressed plans to set up one waste management centre in all inhabited islands of the Maldives. The project will be implemented by dividing the atolls into zones where regional waste management systems would be established, according to the minister.

In this regard, the operation of Vandhoo Island regional waste management centre will begin this month and would cater its services to 43 islands of Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani Atoll.

World Bank has cleared MVR 36.2 million in grants and MVR 110 million as a loan to develop waste management systems in Maldives. The total of the waste management project amounts to MVR 198 million including the MVR 51.2 million budgeted by the government.
