Environment Minister says Maldives is closer to achieving SDGs

Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has said that Maldives is closer to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) compared to other regional countries.

Minister Thoriq Ibrahim assured that the Maldives will be able to reach the target by 2030 and that the determination by the Government to attain the SDGs are remarkable.

The concept of the SDGs was formulated at 2012 at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20. The objective was to produce a set of universally applicable goals that balances the three dimensions of sustainable development: environmental, social, and economic.

These 17 Goals build on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals, while including new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities.

There are 17 goals and 169 targets. Out of the 17 targets 6 of those directly relate to the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Achieving the SDGs requires the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike to make sure we leave a better planet for future generations.
